Thorncliffe Bowling Club News
Open Day Sunday 9th April
Glorious sunshine met our members and South Yorkshire coaches on Open Day. There was a good turnout of members and some people who had never bowled before came to take advantage of learning to bowl with the coaches. The ladies once again providing an excellent range of cakes and serving teas and coffees to the thirsty.

Members will recall that Robert Mallekin was at our AGM last year to help promote our membership drive by providing different games and a cash incentive. He, along with Alan Tizzard and Alan’s wife set up a course on the top green. Thorncliffe Membership Secretary John De Cann said "I know that many members took advantage of the coaches being there by going round the course and having their bowling faults corrected. Some of us actually wondered how we had managed to play so well before with such bad techniques!"

The club received £50 from SYCCGBA for hosting the event and will receive another £250 on completion of a further 10 one hour coaching sessions with those non members who turned up on the day. These sessions have to be completed by the end of April. Membership Secretary, John De Cann, was delighted that four of those bowling for the first time said they would return on the following Tuesday.

A colourful greeting.
Something sharp with something on the edge.
A sport where you find the opposite of fairness.

John was asked by Secretary Fran Parratt to see if he could get the Open Day promoted on Radio Sheffield. I don’t know if anyone listens to Radio Sheffield on a Sunday morning but there is a programme from ten to one o’clock in the afternoon called ‘Clueless’ where the public phone in to answer cryptic clues and guide a presenter to various places in South Yorkshire. John managed to get the club on the Radio when presenter Kat Harbourne arrived at the greens shortly before eleven. He presented her with the next clue which took her to Hillsborough. We gave her a slice of chocolate cake and a cup of tea. She said, on air, that the cake was delicious.

Above is the clue which got the radio car to our greens. For those struggling with it –

A colourful greeting …… Hi green.
Something sharp with something on the edge …… Sharp = thorn, on the edge = cliff.
A sport where you find the opposite of fairness …… Opposite of fairness = biased.
The public got the opposite of fairness as foul so the team went first to the Leisure Centre and then to the football pitches before finding us. We also managed to get a plug in for Millhouses Open Day on Sunday 23rd April.
